Australia Day is January 26th and it is the anniversary of the arrival of the first fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by it's commander Captain Arthur Phillip in 1788.
We celebrated this year at a friend's home with spit fired roasted lamb & lots of yummy sides. Here are some photos of their unique home & yard. They live in the middle of a rain forest.

Australia Day is celebrated in the Summer here...a lot like our Fourth of July BBQ's & get togethers. We also had another chance to hit the beach with friends before the kids went back to school. This time we went a little further down the peninsula to Rye Beach. There is a small pier there & people can easily jump off the end of it & climb the ladder back onto the pier. Hannah & I jumped off (I can't believe she did it). I did not mention to her that early in the morning the sharks come to feed at the end of the pier. Lots of people were further up towards the end of the pier so I figured we were okay, especially since it was mid-day I hoped they'd get eaten first. Seriously, I let the name of a favorite strip of beach fool me. It's called "Safety Beach", apparently renamed...the former name was Shark Bay! I ignorantly thought that the sharks wouldn't come into the bay, especially bay beaches, but I was wrong! I noticed that there were several helicopters that fly along the shoreline every hour or so...wanna know why...they check how close the sharks are to the beaches, if they can see them! So there is always that little thought running around in the back of my head while we are in the water here. But you know what, it's worth it. I love the beach here & I am told that I haven't even seen the good stuff yet.

ReplyDeleteHi Delynn, this is so fun to read each others blogs! I love it! All I do after I import the photo is then click on the photo, it will highlight to blue, then along the bottom it will have options to increase the size, or to add a caption, just click on small, medium, large or extra large.
